At the end of April, we visited the Polish city Gdansk, where the City Museum, in collaboration with the local Museum of World War II and other experts, had organized a major exhibition on the service of residents of the Polish Pomerania region in the German armed forces. The title of the exhibition, “Our Boys” (originally Nasi chłopcy: Mieszkańcy Pomorza Gdańskiego w armii III Rzeszy) refers to the term given to young conscripts in Luxembourg to emphasize that they were not collaborators, but young fellow citizens who were forcibly conscripted into the German army during the war. The professionally curated exhibition, housed in a relatively small space, excellently presented and, in an accessible manner, characterized a whole range of essential aspects of the forced service of the inhabitants of occupied countries in German uniform—a phenomenon that (not only) in neighbouring Poland still sparks controversy today.
The exhibition, which opened in July 2025, was scheduled to run until the end of May this year, but due to high visitor interest, it will be extended.
